Get the Disciples Straight

Nathaniel – a disciple in John 1:43-49 -- but -- NOT in Book of Mark, or Book of Matthew, or Book of Luke, or Book of Acts.

Joseph of Arimathea – a disciple in Book of John -- but -- NOT in Book of Mark, or Book of Matthew, or Book of Luke, or Book of Acts.

Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of
Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders. With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away. John 19:38

Disciple Jesus Loved – described in Book of John -- but -- NOWHERE ELSE. Name was hidden.

... disciple whom Jesus loved ... John 13:23,  John 19:26,  John 20:2,  John 21:7,  John 21:20

Thaddeus – a disciple in Books of Mark and Matthew -- but -- NOT in Book of Luke, or Book of John, or Book of Acts.

Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus;      Matthew 10:3

Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot        Mark 3:18

Simon – is called the Canaanite in Books of Mark and Matthew. He is called the zealot in Book of Mark, Book of Luke, and Book of Acts. In the Book of John there is NO Simon apostle, but Judas is called the son of Simon.

Judas – In John 6:71 it describes Judas as the son of SIMON. Book of Luke described TWO Judas’. Book of Acts 1:13 described Judas as the son of JAMES.

(He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)     John 6:71

When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were
Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James.     Acts 1:13

Only one Judas is described in Books of Mark, Book of Acts, and Book of Matthew.

Two Judas’ – described in Book of John and the Book of Luke. The second Judas in Book of John is described as “not Isacariot.” The second Judas in the Book of Luke and the only Judas mentioned in the Book of Mark and Book of Matthew is described as “Isacariot.”

Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not
unto the world?      John 14:22

The Book of John and Acts only named eleven disciples!

After Judas killed himself, they had to keep the number of apostles to only twelve so they drew straws to see who would replace Judas.

Then they prayed, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.” Then
they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles..     Acts 1:24-26

Paul elected himself as an apostle.

The 12th Member of Apostles

The lists of the Twelve Apostles are different:

Luke 6:13-16 and Acts 1:13  list Judas the brother of James as an apostle.

13 When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles: 14 Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, 15 Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, 16 Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.     Luke 6:13-16

13 When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James.      Acts 1:13

Matt 10:3 and Mark 3:18 list does not include Judas, instead lists Thaddeus as the apostle.

Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus;      Matt 10:3

16 These are the twelve he appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter), 17 James son of Zebedee and his brother John (to them he gave the name Boanerges, which means “sons of thunder”), 18 Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot 19 and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.     Mark 3:16

How did Jesus Choose his Disciples?

The Books of Matthew and John say that Jesus chose his disciples several at a time from different locations.

The Books of Mark and Luke say NO, the disciples were all chosen at once.

A - Matthew & John - different times & locations:

One or two of his brothers (uncertain), fishermen from Galilee, several followers of John the Baptist, etc.

As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.     Matthew
4:18

Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them,      Matthew 4:21

Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”
Matthew 8:19

When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. John 1:37

Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had
followed Jesus. John 1:40

The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, “Follow me.”
John 1:43

B - Mark & Luke - all at once:

"Called unto him his disciples and of them he chose twelve."

One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to
God. When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he
also designated apostles: Luke 6:12-13

Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. He
appointed twelve that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach      Mark
3:13-14

Who was it at the Receipt of Custom?

Who was the man sitting at the receipt of custom that Jesus called to be his disciple?

Matthew: It was Matthew

As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s
booth. “Follow me,” he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.    Matthew 9:9

Mark: NO, it was Levi

As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow
me,” Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him.      Mark 2:14

The author of the Book of Matthew doesn’t seem to be Matthew. Why would he use his name as it it were someone else instead of the first person “me”?

Paul’s Apostles Total 14

Paul in his writings described the people who saw Jesus after he had “risen.”

… he [Jesus] was seen by Cephas, and afterwords by the twelve … then he was seen by James, and afterwards by all the apostles.      1 Corinthians 15:5-7

A question for Paul is, Are "the twelve" different than "the apostles???” Cephas is associated with “the twelve” so that makes 13 total.

If you include the self-proclaimed apostle Paul, that would make 14 total

The Many Virgin Marys of the World

many Virgins

The Council of Ephesus (A. D. 431) declared Mary "Mother of God," her assumption being declared in 813, and her Immaculate Conception by the Pope and Council in 1851 — after all, the previous religions had one.  It was almost universal, for ages before the purported birth of Jesus, and "the pure virginity of the celestial mother was a tenet of faith for two thousand plus years before the western Virgin Mary now adored was ever born.

In almost every Roman Catholic Church on the continent of Europe may be seen pictures and statues of Mary, the "Queen of Heaven," standing on the crescent moon, and her head surrounded with twelve stars.

India

Devi, Maha-Devi—"The One Great Goddess" —and have temples erected in honor of her.  Scholar Gonzales states that among the Indians he found a temple "Parituræ Virginis"—of the Virgin about to bring forth a child.

Countries of the Orient

Maya, was the mother of Buddha, Devaki was the mother of Crishna.  They were both worshiped as virgins.  They are both represented with the infant Saviours in their arms, just as the virgin of the Christians is represented at the present day.  Maya was so pure that it was impossible for God, man, or Asura to view her with any carnal desire.

"No person could bear to gaze upon Devaki, because of the light that invested her." "The gods, invisible to mortals, celebrated her praise continually from the time that Vishnu was contained in her person."

Chinese

The Chinese have several virgins they worshiped.  At Canton worshiped an idol, to which they gave the name of "The Virgin."

"Upon the altars of the Chinese temples were placed, behind a screen, an image of Shin-moo, or the 'Holy Mother,' sitting with a child in her arms, in an alcove, with rays of glory around her head, and tapers constantly burning before her."

Shin-moo is called the "Mother Goddess," and the "Virgin." Her child, who was exposed in his infancy, was brought up by poor fishermen. He became a great man, and performed wonderful miracles.

In wealthy houses the sacred image of the "Mother Goddess" is carefully kept in a recess behind an altar, veiled with a silken screen.  The Rev. Mr. Gutzlaff, in his "Travels," speaking of the Chinese people, says: "Though otherwise very reasonable men, they have always showed themselves bigoted heathens. . . . They have everywhere built splendid temples, chiefly in honor of Ma-tsoo-po, the 'Queen of Heaven.'"

Egypt

Isis, mother of the Egyptian Saviour, Horus, was worshiped as a virgin.    The religious monuments of Egypt have the infant Horus seated in the lap of his virgin mother. She is styled "Our Lady," the "Queen of Heaven," "Star of the Sea," "Governess," "Mother of God," "Intercessor," "Immaculate Virgin,"

The most common representation of Horus is being nursed on the knee of Isis, or suckled at her breast.  Also in statues and basso-relievos, when Isis appears alone, she is entirely veiled from head to foot, in common with nearly every other goddess, as a symbol of a mother's chastity.

The Christian Virgin Mary seen with child in arms and standing on a cresecent moon is a complete identification with Isis and Horus." This crescent moon is the symbol of Isis and Juno, and is the Yoni of the Hindoos

The Christian Father Epiphanius accounts for the fact of the Egyptians worshiping a virgin and child, by declaring that i was a prophecy that was revealed to them —"Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bring forth a son"

The Egyptian Isis was also worshiped in Italy, many centuries before the Christian era, and all images of her, with the infant Horus in her arms, have been adopted by Christians.

Babylonians and Assyrians

The ancient Babylonians and Assyrians worshiped a goddess mother, and son, who was represented in pictures and in images as an infant in his mother's arms . Her name was Mylitta, the divine son was Tammuz, the Saviour, whom we have seen rose from the dead. He was invested with all his father's attributes and glory, and identified with him. He was worshiped as mediator.

Etruscans

They worshiped a Virgin Mother and Son, goddess Nutria.  Virgin Mother and Son, was represented in pictures and images a son in the arms of his mother.  There is ruins of a temple dedicated to her.  "To the Great Goddess Nutria," is an inscription which has been found among the ruins of the temple.  This goddess was also worshiped in Italy. Long before the Christian era.

Israel

The children of Israel, who, were idolaters of the worst kind—worshiping the sun, moon and stars, and offering human sacrifices to their god, Moloch—were also worshipers of a Virgin Mother, whom they styled the "Queen of Heaven."

Jeremiah, the prophet 625 B.C., rebuked the Israel idol worshipers.

16 As for the word that thou hast spoken unto us in the name of the Lord, we will not hearken unto thee.

17 But we will certainly do whatsoever thing goeth forth out of our own mouth, to burn incense unto the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, as we have done, we, and our fathers, our kings, and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem: for then had we plenty of victuals, and were well, and saw no evil.

18 But since we left off to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, we have wanted all things, and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine.

19 And when we burned incense to the queen of heaven, and poured out drink offerings unto her, did we make her cakes to worship her, and pour out drink offerings unto her, without our men?

20 Then Jeremiah said unto all the people, to the men, and to the women, and to all the people which had given him that answer, saying,

21 The incense that ye burned in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, ye, and your fathers, your kings, and your princes, and the people of the land, did not the Lord remember them, and came it not into his mind?

22 So that the Lord could no longer bear, because of the evil of your doings, and because of the abominations which ye have committed; therefore is your land a desolation, and an astonishment, and a curse, without an inhabitant, as at this day.        Jeremiah, 44:16-22.

Persians

Persians worshiped the Virgin and Child.  They erected monuments of Mithra the Virgin.  She is seen suckling her child.

Greeks and Romans

Greeks and Romans worshiped the Virgin Mother and Child for hundreds of yeasrs before the Christians came into existence.  Myrrha, the mother of Bacchus who had the title of "Queen of Heaven."

Minerva, who went by the title of "Virgin Queen," was worshiped in ancient Greece.

Juno was called the "Virgin Queen of Heaven."

Diana, who had the title of "Mother," was nevertheless famed for her virginal purity.

Muscovites

Muscovites worshiped a sacred three, composed of a woman with a male child in her lap, and another standing by her. Her title was "Queen of Heaven."  This group was also symbolized by an animal symbol called the "Golden Heifer."

Ancient Germans

The ancient Germans worshiped a virgin goddess under the the name of Hertha, or Ostara.  She was represented in images as a woman with a child in her arms.

Ancient Scandinavians

The ancient Scandinavians worshiped a virgin goddess called Disa.  The ancient Scandinavians also worshiped the goddess Frigga. She was mother of "Baldur the Good," his father being Odin, the supreme god of the northern nations.

Ancient Gual, Druids

In Gaul, the ancient Druids worshiped the Virgo-Paritura as the "Mother of God," and a festival was annually celebrated in honor of this virgin.

Mexico

This mother, who had the title of "Virgin," and "Queen of Heaven," [334:9] was Chimalman, or Sochiquetzal, and the infant was Quetzalcoatle, the crucified Saviour.  The annunciation to the Virgin Chimalman, that she should become the mother of the Saviour Quetzalcoatle, was the subject of a Mexican hieroglyphic.  She appears to be receiving a bunch of flowers from the angel.

God in the flesh

God in the Flesh

God-in-the-Flesh Definition

God in the flesh

God-in-the-Flesh Definition

The teachings of Jesus are so confusing that consensus on their meanings is very rare, and, often in God’s “Word” (the New Testement)   describes Jesus’ very own disciples as not understanding his teachings (because they are contradictory?).

IS ALL SCRIPTURE INSPIRED OF GOD?

God said in his “Word”  …

YES, inspired of God himself!

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,      2 Tim 3:16

NO. God said in his “Word”…

that the scriptures are NOT inspired of God himself.

In this self-confident boasting I am not talking as the Lord would, but as a fool.      2 Cor 11:17

I say this as a concession, not as a command.     1 Cor 7:6

To the rest I say this (I, not the Lord): If any brother has a wife who is not a believer and she is willing to live with him, he must not divorce her.      1 Cor 7:12

Now about virgins: I have no command from the Lord, but I give a judgment as one who by the Lord’s mercy is trustworthy.    1 Cor 7:25

Then God said in his “Word” … that the scriptures

DO NOT bring salvation.

You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me,       John 5:39

Christ’s Witness of Himself is True or Not True.

TRUE

I am one that bear witness of myself. . . . Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true.     John 8:18, 14

NOT TRUE

If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.      John 5:31

Messiah Resurrected?

None of the Biblical passages about the Messiah mentions that he will be resurrected from the dead.  Even if someone is resurrected – this does not necessarily qualify him to be the Messiah. The prophet Elisha resurrected a child, and Jesus allegedly resurrected Lazarus. Does this qualify the child or Lazarus to be the Messiah? Just like the Christians say there are three persons in one God, does this now mean there are three persons in one Messiah also???

Do we have to “accept” Jesus’, or is his effect automatic?

God said in his “Word” that it is ...

AUTOMATIC

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!     John 1:29

For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,    1 Cor 15:3

For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.    1 Cor 15:22

“as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive,”

But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.     Heb 2:9, 17

comparing it to the Jewish high priest making atonement for all the people,

because the law brings wrath. And where there is no law there is no transgression.     Rom 4:15

also    Rom 5:12-19

no sin where there is no law given [contra: Rom 2:12], 1 John 1:7, 2:2, 1 Tim 4:10,

Jesus is savior of all, especially those who believe,

Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people, so also one righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people.   Rom 5:18

He died for all, the just and the unjust

For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit.    1 Pet 3:18

Atonement sacrifices in the Old Testament were not conditional on repentance or acceptance

(e.g. Lev 16:16-18, 21, 24, 30, 34).

Then God said in his “Word” that … You ...

MUST DO SOMETHING

(have faith, do good works, keep commandments, be baptized, or call on Jesus’ name, or some combination) See following Section on Salvation.

Was Jesus perfect?

God said in his word –

NO, Jesus said he was not perfect

“Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone.    Mark 10:18

Jesus lied about going to a feast ...

8 You go to the festival. I am not going up to this festival, because my time has not yet fully come.” 9 After he had said this, he stayed in Galilee.

10 However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went also, not publicly, but in secret.   John 7:8-10

God said – he was in his "word"

YES, JESUS SINLESS

God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.   2 Cor 5:21

but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.     1 Pet 1:19

“He committed no sin,
and no deceit was found in his mouth.”     1 Pet 2:22

All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.     1 John 3:3, 5

Noah was perfect

This is the account of Noah and his family.  Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God.     Gen 6:9

For or Against Jesus:

FOR HIM

God said in his word – if you are not for him, you are against him.

“Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.    Matt 12:30

NOT AGAINST

God said –  if you are not against him, you are for him.

for whoever is not against us is for us.    Mark 9:40

??(The indifferent or the undecided don’t know if the result is for or against.) ??

Who is God’s “firstborn”?

ISRAEL

Then say to Pharaoh, ‘This is what the Lord says: Israel is my firstborn son,    Ex 4:22

DAVID

And I will appoint him to be my firstborn,
the most exalted of the kings of the earth.    Ps 89:27

God said –

JESUS

So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.    Heb 1:4

Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself.     Heb 3:3

And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.     Col 1:18

Jesus’ deeds

NOT WRITTEN

God said –The world could not contain the books if all his deeds were written of

Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.    John 21:25

WRITTEN

God said – His deeds have all been written of

In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach    Acts 1:1

Christ Invisible?

God said –Paul says no one has seen Christ, he is ...

INVISIBLE

Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.   1 Tim 1:17

who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen.    1 Tim 6:16

VISIBLE

??? But this contradicts all the gospels stories of Jesus.

Solomon

God-Jesus implies that he is

GREATER THAN SOLOMON

The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now something greater than Solomon is here.    Matt 12:42

The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the people of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom; and now something greater than Solomon is here.    Luke 11:31

NOT  GREATER THAN SOLOMON

Old Testament says – But there could never be one greater than Solomon

I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be.      1 Kings 3:12

God gave Solomon wisdom and very great insight, and a breadth of understanding as measureless as the sand on the seashore.     1 Kings 4:29

King Solomon was greater in riches and wisdom than all the other kings of the earth. 24 The whole world sought audience with Solomon to hear the wisdom God had put in his heart.    1 Kings 10:23-24

King Solomon was greater in riches and wisdom than all the other kings of the earth. 23 All the kings of the earth sought audience with Solomon to hear the wisdom God had put in his heart.     2 Chron 9:22-23

Blood Sacrifice

ATONEMENT FOR SIN

The keystone of Jesus’ plan of salvation, according to NT, is the blood sacrifice of God’s only begotten son, the Lamb of God, as the only acceptable atonement for Adam’s sin.

NOT

Sacrifices do not atone for sin

Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.      Heb 10:11

Jesus Only Benefits the Uncircumcised

Behold, I Paul, say to you, that if you be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing. [Gal 5:2]

It’s righteous to be uncircumcised???  Here is God speaking in the Old Testament – –

This is my covenant which you shall keep between me and you and your seed after you: every man and child among you shall be circumcised. [Gen 17:10]

“Seek, and ye shall find”

YES

God said in his word – Seek and ye will find. , especially if you seek the Lord

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.     Matt 7:7

He went out to meet Asa and said to him, “Listen to me, Asa and all Judah and Benjamin. The Lord is with you when you are with him. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will forsake you.      2 Chron 15:2

Those who know your name trust in you,
for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.     Ps 9:10

Seek the Lord while he may be found;
call on him while he is near.     Isa 55:6

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.    Jer 29:13

NO

God said – But Jesus’ followers will not find him if they seek him

You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come.”     John 7:34

Once more Jesus said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.”     John 8:21

Jesus Message for Who?

God said in his word – Jesus said his message was only for

ISRAEL

He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.”     Matt 15:24

These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. 6 Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel.    Matt 10:5-6

ALL NATIONS

God said – But then Jesus tells his disciples to preach to all nations

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,     Matt 28:19

TWO CLASSES

God said – Jesus says there are two classes, “other sheep I have, which are not of this fold”

I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd.     John 10:16

ABRHAM'S SEED

God said – Once you become a Christian you are “Abraham’s seed”

If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.     Gal 3:29

New Commandment

God-Jesus says  “love one another” And that it is a ...

NEW COMMANDMENT

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.    John 13:34

If it was new, this would violate Deut 4:2 and 12:32.

Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the Lord your God that I give you.     Deut 4:2

See that you do all I command you; do not add to it or take away from it     Deut 12:32

NOT NEW;

it is the Mosaic commandment “Love thy neighbor as thyself”

“‘Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.     Lev 19:18

John the Baptist

NOT ELIJAH

John the Baptist says he’s not Elijah

They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?”  He said, “I am not.”  “Are you the Prophet?”   He answered, “No.”         ~ John 1:21

JESUS IS ELIJAH

And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.    Matt 11:14

Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things.12 But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.” 13 Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist.    Matt 17:11-13

NONE GREATER THAN JOHN THE BAPTIST

Jesus says that NO one yet born (including himself?) is greater than John the Baptist

Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.    Matt 11:11

THE LEAST IS JOHN THE BAPTIST

Yet the same verse (Matt 11:11) Jesus says John the Baptist is the least in the kingdom of heaven.

Ascend to Heaven

JESUS IS THE ONLY ONE ever to ascend to heaven

No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man     John 3:13

An UNNAMED MAN known to Paul ascended to heaven,

“The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried.    Luke 16:22

Jesus also tells a parable in which Lazarus was in heaven

ELIJAH, ENOCH all ascended to heaven.

As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind.    2 Kings 2:11

Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.     Gen 5:24

By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away.” For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God.      Heb 11:5

BLESSED VIRGIN MARY, MOTHER OF GOD

And how about Mary, the “Holy Blessed Virgin Mother of God?” …. she ascended (assumed) into heaven and didn’t die … Mary’s assumption into heaven was “assumed body and soul into heavenly glory”. This doctrine was dogmatically defined by Pope Pius XII on 1 November 1950, in the apostolic constitution Munificentissimus Deus by exercising papal infallibility.  The Pope pointed to Genesis 3:15  and 1 Corinthians 15:54.

And I will put enmity
between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and hers;
he will crush your head,
and you will strike his heel.”            Gen 3:15

When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”     1 Corinthians 15:54

Jesus Liable to the Hell of Fire

SAY FOOL & YOU GO TO HELL

But whoever says: “You fool,” shall be liable to the hell of fire.”

But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister[a][b] will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’[c] is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.    Matthew 5:22

JESUS CALLED MANY FOOLS

You [Pharisee] blind fools!  For which is greater, the gold or the Temple that has made the gold sacred?”

You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred?    Matthew 23:17

You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred?    Matthew  23:19

“You [Pharisee] fools!  Did not he who made the outside make the inside also?”    Luke 11:40

Jesus was the recipient of his own curse — “liable to the hell of fire.”

Jesus begins his ministry when?

Before John's arrest

22 After this, Jesus and his disciples went out into the Judean countryside, where he spent some time with them, and baptized. 23 Now John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water, and people were coming and being baptized. 24 (This was before John was put in prison.)     John 3:22- 24.

After John's arrest

14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God.      Mark 1:14

Zedbulun and Nphtali

12 When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he withdrew to Galilee.
13 Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali—
14 to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah:
15 “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,
the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan,
    Galilee of the Gentiles—
16 the people living in darkness
    have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death
    a light has dawned.”
17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”         Matt 4:12,17

Paul's trip to Apostles

Soon after his conversion and recovery in Damascus, he spent some time with the Apostles

19 and after taking some food, he regained his strength.  Saul spent several days with the disciples in Damascus

27 But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. He told them how Saul on his journey had seen the Lord and that the Lord had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had preached fearlessly in the name of Jesus.

28 So Saul stayed with them and moved about freely in Jerusalem, speaking boldly in the name of the Lord.     (Acts 9:19, 27-28).

NO

Not until three years later, and then he only saw Peter and James

17 I did not go up to Jerusalem to see those who were apostles before I was, but I went into Arabia. Later I returned to Damascus.

18 Then after three years, I went up to Jerusalem to get acquainted with Cephas[a] and stayed with him fifteen days.

19 I saw none of the other apostles—only James, the Lord’s brother.

Christ preached his first Sermon on the Mountain or on the Plain???

MOUNTAIN

And seeing the multitude he went up into a mountain, and when he was set his disciples came unto him. And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying. (Matt. 5:1, 2.)

PLAIN

And he came down with them and stood in the plain; and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people . . . came to hear him. . . . And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples and said. (Luke 6:17, 20.)

Mark, John and Paul are unfamiliar with any such sermon.

Christ laid down his life for his friends and sheep or for his enemies

FRIENDS & SHEEP

Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. [John 15:13]

The good shepherd gives his life for the sheep. [John 10:11]

FOR HIS ENEMIES

When we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his son. [Rom 5:10 ]

Lawful to put Christ to death and not lawful

LAWFUL

The Jews answered him, we have a law, and by our law he ought to die. [John 19:7

NOT LAWFUL

The Jews therefore said to him, it is not lawful for us to put any man to death. [John 18:31]

Did Jesus say before the cock crow or before the cock crows twice?

Before the cock crow.

Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. Matthew 26:34

And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me. Luke 22:34

Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice. John 13:38

Before the cock crows twice.

And Jesus saith unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. Mark 14:30

Did the cock crow before or after Peter's denial?

Peter denied Jesus three times before the cock crowed.

But he denied before them all....
And again he denied with an oath.
Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew. Matthew 26:70, 72, 74

And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not.
And after a little while another saw him, and said, Thou art also of them. And Peter said, Man, I am not.
And about the space of one hour after ... Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew. Luke 22:57-60

Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not. ... And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not. One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him? Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew. John 18:17, 25-27

The cock crowed after Peter's first denial.

And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and said, And thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth. But he denied.... And the cock crew.
And a maid saw him again, and began to say to them that stood by, This is one of them. And he denied it again.
And a little after, they that stood by said again to Peter, Surely thou art one of them.... But he began to curse and to swear, saying, I know not this man of whom ye speak.
And the second time the cock crew. Mark 14:67-72

The Holy Ghost was bestowed on. . . or … before … or after … Pentecost

BEFORE

19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together…

22 And when he had said this he breathed on them, and said to them, receive you the Holy Spirit.   John 20:22

DAY OF PENTECOST

And when the day of Pentecost was fully come they were all of one accord in one place. . . . And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost.     Acts 2:1, 4

AFTER:

3 He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.

4 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.

5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”    Acts 1:5

Bethany Never Existed

Image removed.

Bethany means “House of God.”  This is the alleged city where Jesus took five loafs of bread and two fishes and multiplied them continuously to feed a huge crowd of 5,000 people.

17 “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered.

18 “Bring them here to me,” he said. 19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 21 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.       Matthew 14:17-21

Bethany never existed at that time.  This is evidenced by others including the Church father Origen who said he could find no trace of Bethany beyond Jordan.

Cleansing of the temple

It was at the start of Jesus' Ministry

John says it was early in Jesus' ministry.

11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

12 After this he went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples: and they continued there not many days.

13 And the Jews' passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

14 And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting:

15 And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables;

16 And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise.    John 2:13-16

It was at the end of Jesus' Ministry

Matt, Mark, and Luke say it occurred after the triumphal entry into Jerusalem.

12 And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves,

13 And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.     Matt 21:12-13

15 And they come to Jerusalem: and Jesus went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves;        Mark 11:15-19

45 And he went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein, and them that bought;

46 Saying unto them, It is written, My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves.

47 And he taught daily in the temple. But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him,      Luke 19:45-48

Jesus' Anointing

Simon's House

It was in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper.

6 Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper,

7 There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat.      Matt 26:6-7

And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head.         Mark 14:3

Martha's House

It was in Bethany at Martha's house.

Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead.

2 There they made him a supper; and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him.     John 12:1-2

Pharisee's House

It was in Galilee at the house of a Pharisee.

37 And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment,

38 And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.    Luke 7:36-38

What was anointed???

Head

Matt and Mark say his head was anointed;

There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat.    Matt 26:7

as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head.      Mark 14:3

Feet

Luke and John say his feet.

38 And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.    Luke 7:36-38

3 Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.     John 12:3

Who anointed Jesus???

Mary

John says Mary anointed him;

Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.     John 12:3

Not named

The others don't say who the woman was.

Centurion sent messengers.

2 And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die.

3 And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant.

6 Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof:

7 Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed.

Luke 7:2-3, 7:6-7

Dead / Alive Daughter

Dead

Jairus told Jesus his daughter was dead

And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway side begging       Mark 10:46

And it came to pass, that as he was come nigh unto Jericho, a certain blind man sat by the way side begging:       Luke 18:35

Not willing in his mission

Jesus expressed unwillingness to perform his mission of being crucified

And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.        Matt 26:39

And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.        Mark 14:36

They were so impressed they wanted to make Jesus their king

14 After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.” 15 Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.    John 6:14-15

Man possessed

Asked Jesus, No, No One Asked

Peter and Thomas each ask where Jesus is going

36 Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?”
Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.”
John 13:36

5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

How to Act

How to Act

How to Act

Should we boast?

God said in his word - NO

To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’ 13    “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’ 14    “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”            Luke 18:9-14

Granted. But they were broken off because of unbelief, and you stand by faith. Do not be  arrogant, but tremble.    Rom 11:20

In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe  yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”       1 Pet 5:5

God said - Paul boasts of his faith and says one should be proud of it

Therefore I glory in Christ Jesus in my service to God.    Rom 15:17

In this self-confident boasting I am not talking as the Lord would, but as a fool.    2 Cor 11:17

Should we show our good works?

God said in his word - YES, say

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and  glorify your Father in heaven.    Matt 5:16

Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may
see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.    1 Pet 2:12

God said - NO, says

“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2 “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.       Matt 6:1-4

“Everything they do is done for people to see: They make their phylacteries[a] wide and the tassels on their garments long;    Matt 23:5

Should we abstain from eating flesh?

God said in his word - YES, if it offends, says Paul

It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother or sister to fall.    Rom 14:21

God said - But let NO one pass judgment on you in matters of food and drink

Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day.    Col 2:16

They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth. 4 For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving,     1 Tim 4:3-4

Everything that lives and moves about will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything.       Gen 9:3

Should we worry about the future?

God said in his word - NO says

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[a]? 28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.         Matthew 6:25-34

Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.24 Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! 25 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life[a]? 26 Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest? 27 “Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 28 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith! 29 And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. 30 For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. 31 But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.        Luke 12:22-31

God said - YES says

Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.    1 Tim 5:8

Should we please?

God said - that Paul does

even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.    1 Cor 10:33

God said -that Paul doesn’t

Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.    Gal 1:10

Should we “run”?

God said in his word - YES

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.    1 Cor 9:24

God said - NO

As it is written:

“There is no one righteous, not even one;    Rom 3:10

Are there any who are righteous?

God said in his word - NO

“Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone.    Mark
10:18,

As it is written:

“There is no one righteous, not even one;    Rom 3:10

for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,    Rom 3:23

8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.    1 John 1:8-10

“When they sin against you—for there is no one who does not sin—and you become angry with them and give them over to their enemies, who take them captive to their own lands, far away or near;     1 Kings 8:46

All have turned away, all have become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one.    Ps 14:3

God said - in his word - says YES

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.    James 5:16

If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,”    James 2:3

In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. 6 Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly.      Luke 1:5-6

I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.    Luke 15:7

Ezek 18 lists what one must do to be “just” (=righteous?)   (also Gen 7:1  Job 1:1, 8)

God said - God only protects only the righteous

For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”    1 Pet 3:12

although Jesus died both for the just and the unjust

For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit.    1 Pet 3:18

God said - Paul is the chief sinner

Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst.    1 Tim 1:15

God said - True Christians DO NOT sin

No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.

7 Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. 8 The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. 9 No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God.    1 John 3:6-9

Should we call anybody a “fool”?

God said in his word - Jesus says NO, we would be in danger of hell-fire

But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister [a][b] will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’[c] is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.    Matt 5:22

God said - But Jesus DOES so

But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.    Matt 7:26

You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred?       Matt
23:17

You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred?    Matt 23:19

Five of them were foolish and five were wise.    Matt 25:2

You foolish people! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also?    Luke 11:40

God said - and Paul DOES

but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles,    1 Cor
1:23

Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become “fools” so that you may become wise.    1 Cor 3:18

We are fools for Christ, but you are so wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are honored, we are dishonored!    1 Cor 4:10

How foolish! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies.    1 Cor 15:36

You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified.    Gal 3:1

Should we curse our enemies?

God said in his word - Jesus curses his enemies

Matt 6:15, 12:34, 16:3, 22:18, 23:13-15, 17, 19, 27, 29, 33

He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: “‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.    Mark 7:6

You foolish people! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also?    Luke 11:40

“Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves, which people walk over without knowing it.”    Luke 11:44

Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don’t know how to interpret this present time?    Luke 12:56

God said - Jesus says love your enemies

But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.    Matt 5:39

But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,    Matt 5:44

God said - But shun Gentiles, Samaritans, non-believers

Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take them into your house or welcome them. 11 Anyone who welcomes them shares in their wicked work.    2 John 9-11

These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans.    Matt 10:5

God said - God destroys his enemies

But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them—bring them here and kill them in front of me.’”    Luke 19:27

God said - Paul curses his enemies

Alexander the metalworker did me a great deal of harm. The Lord will repay him for what he has done.    2 Tim 4:14

God said - And do double what they have done to you

Give back to her as she has given; pay her back double for what she has done. Pour her a double portion from her own cup.    Rev 18:6

God said - Do not rejoice when your enemy falls

for though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again, but the wicked stumble when calamity strikes.        Saying 28

17    Do not gloat when your enemy falls; when they stumble, do not let your heart rejoice,
18    or the Lord will see and disapprove and turn his wrath away from them.    Prov 24:16-18

Should we judge?

 God said - NO

“Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.    Luke 6:37

“Do not judge, or you too will be judged.    Matt 7:1

God said - YES

Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”    John 7:24

Should we swear oaths?

God said - It is FORBIDDEN

But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King.    Matt 5:34-35

God said in his word - ACCEPTABLE

Therefore, anyone who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. 21 And anyone who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells in it. 22 And anyone who swears by heaven swears by God’s throne and by the one who sits on it.    Matt 23:20-22

Also      Num 30:2, Gen 21:23-24, 31, 31:53, Heb 6:13

Should Christians “contend”?

 God said - says YES.

Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s
holy people.    Jude 3

Paul contended

As was his custom, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures, 3 explaining and proving that the Messiah had to suffer and rise from the dead. “This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Messiah,” he said. 4 Some of the Jews were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, as did a large number of God-fearing Greeks and quite a few prominent women.    Acts 17:2-4

So he reasoned in the synagogue with both Jews and God-fearing Greeks, as well as in the marketplace day by day with those who happened to be there.    Acts 17:17

God said - Do NOT contend

The lips of fools bring them strife, and their mouths invite a beating.    Prov 18:6

Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care. Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge,    1 Tim 6:20

Keep reminding God’s people of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen. 15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. 16 Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly.    2 Tim 2:14-16

And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful.    2 Tim 2:24

But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves,
lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a  form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people. 6 They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, 7 always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth.    2 Tim 3:1-7

God said - Answer an unbeliever

But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,       1 Pet 3:15

God said - Anyone who speaks to an unbeliever shares his evil

Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God;
whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take them into your house or welcome them. 11 Anyone who welcomes them shares in their wicked work.    2 John 9-11

God said - Exhort “with all long suffering”

Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction.    2 Tim 4:2

Do We Hate or Love?

If you hate your brother you are a murderer and cannot love God that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.”John 3:15

Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”    John 4:20

You must be willing to hate your brother (and your family) to be a follower of Jesus

“If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple.    Luke 14:26

Temptation

Does God tempt? God's Word says NO.

When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone;    James 1:13

God's Word say YES.

22 Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied.

And lead us not into temptation,    but deliver us from the evil one.’     Matt 6:13

Deut 4:34  8:2  Judg 2:22 (and others)

God controls the extent of our temptations

13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.     1 Cor 10:13

9 if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials and to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgment.     2 Pet 2:9

10 Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come on the whole world to test the inhabitants of the earth.     Rev 3:10

Temptation is joy

2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,[a] whenever you face trials of many kinds,    James 1:2

Sin

Was there sin before the Law?

Paul says YES

To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone’s account where there is no law.    Rom 5:13

and Paul says NO

because the law brings wrath. And where there is no law there is no transgression.    Rom 4:15

Where is Satan?

 Chained in hell

4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell,[a] putting them in chains of darkness[b] to be held for judgment;     2 Pet 2:4

6 And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their proper dwelling—these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day.     Jude 6

Walking about in the earth

8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.     1 Pet 5:8

6 One day the angels[a] came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan[b] also came with them. 7 The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?”

Satan answered the Lord, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.”     Job 1:6-7

Job also says he occasionally visits heaven).

He is the god or prince of this world

31 Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out.     John 12:31

12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.     Eph 6:12

He was “cast out” of the world at the time of Jesus

31 Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out.     John 12:31

Devils

 Devils cannot tell a truth

You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.    John 8:44

Devils say that Jesus is the Messiah

Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah.    Luke 4:41

Forgiveness
Will all sins be forgiven to the believer?

YES    God said in his word -

39 Through him everyone who believes is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses.     Acts 13:39

13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you[a] alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins,     Col 2:13

9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.     1 John 1:9

NO, Not all     God said -

31 And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. 32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.     Matt 12:31-32

29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin.”     Mark 3:29

Forgets         God said - If sin is forgiven, God forgets it

25 “I, I am the one who blots out your transgression for my own sake,
and I’ll remember your sins no more.     Isa 43:25

34 No longer will a person teach his neighbor or his relative: ‘Know the Lord.’ Instead, they’ll all know me, from the least to the greatest of them,” declares the Lord. “Indeed, I’ll forgive their iniquity, and I’ll remember their sin no more.”     Jer 31:34

12 For I will be merciful regarding their wrong deeds,
and I will never again remember their sins.”     Heb 8:12

Remembers       God said - God still remembers it

7 Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.     Ex 34:7

Are We Commanded to Baptize?

Are all apostles commanded to baptize?

God said in his word - Jesus says YES

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,    Matt 28:19

God said - Paul says NO

I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15 so no one can say that you were baptized in my name. 16 (Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I don’t remember if I baptized anyone else.) 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel—not with wisdom and eloquence, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.    1 Cor 1:14-17

Paul Baptized Who?

Paul says that at Corinth he baptized “none … but Crispus and Gaius

I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius,    1 Cor 1:14

Then he says he baptized Stephanas’ family (v. 16). Then proceeds to say he doesn’t know whether he baptized any one else

(Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I don’t remember if I baptized anyone else.)    1 Cor 1:16

Paul Uses Trickery?

Paul says he does NOT use trickery

For the appeal we make does not spring from error or impure motives, nor are we trying to trick you.    1 Thess 2:3

Then Paul says he DOES use trickery

Be that as it may, I have not been a burden to you. Yet, crafty fellow that I am, I caught you by trickery!    2 Cor 12:16

Sex/Marriage

God’s first words to Adam are the command to multiply

It is not not good for the man to be alone     Gen 2:18

Paul says to avoid marriage and sex

7 Now for the matters you wrote about: “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.”     1 Cor 7:1,

8 Now to the unmarried[a] and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I do.      1 Cor 7:8

37 But the man who has settled the matter in his own mind, who is under no compulsion but has control over his own will, and who has made up his mind not to marry the virgin—this man also does the right thing     1 Cor 7:37

But it is better to marry than to burn (v. 9).

Honor Father & Mother?

Jesus said to honor father and mother (or be put to death)

4 Because God said, ‘You are to honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever curses father or mother must certainly be put to death.’     Matt 15:4

10 Because Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever curses his father or mother must certainly be put to death.’     Mark 7:10

19 honor your father and mother,’ and, ‘you must love your neighbor as yourself.’”     Matt 19:19

19 You know the commandments: ‘Never murder.’ ‘Never commit adultery.’ ‘Never steal.’ ‘Never give false testimony.’ ‘Never cheat.’ ‘Honor your father and mother.’”     Mark 10:19

20 You know the commandments: ‘Never commit adultery. Never murder. Never steal. Never give false testimony. Honor your father and mother.’”    Luke 18:20

But he required his disciples to hate father and mother

26 If any man cometh unto me, and hateth not his own father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.     Luke 14:26

and ... Jesus said that he came to turn the children against their parents

35 For I came to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law:     Matt 10:35

51 Think ye that I am come to give peace in the earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division: 52 for there shall be from henceforth five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three. 53 They shall be divided, father against son, and son against father; mother against daughter, and daughter against her mother; mother in law against her daughter in law, and daughter in law against her mother in law.     Luke 12:51-53

 “Call no man your father”
9 And call no man your father on the earth: for one is your Father, even he who is in heaven.     Matt 23:9

But you should provide for your family

8 But if any provideth not for his own, and specially his own household, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an unbeliever.     1 Tim 5:8

What do we reap?

YES You reap what you sow

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.    2 Cor 9:6

Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.    Gal 6:7

SOME reap without sowing

“His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed?    Matt 25:26

“His master replied, ‘I will judge you by your own words, you wicked servant! You knew, did you, that I am a hard man, taking out what I did not put in, and reaping what I did not sow?
Luke 19:22

Is temptation a good thing?

NO,

And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.    Matt 6:13

Forgive us our sins,
for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.
And lead us not into temptation.    Luke 11:4

YES,

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds,    James 1:2

Unbelief

It is caused by the devil

Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.    Luke 8:12

Sometimes it is caused by God

For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie 12 and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.    2 Thess 2:11-12

Sometimes it is caused by Jesus

He told them, “The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those on the
outside everything is said in parables 12 so that, “‘they may be ever seeing but never perceiving, and ever hearing but never understanding; otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!’”    Mark 4:11-12

Whose is the Earth?

 Satan’s

31 Now is [a]the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.     John 12:31

30 I will no more speak much with you, for the prince of the world cometh: and he hath nothing in me;     John 14:30,

12 For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world-rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.     Eph 6:12

Jesus’

26 for the earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof.     1 Cor 10:26

5 and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loveth us, and loosed us from our sins by his blood;     Rev 1:5

29 And Moses said unto him, As soon as I am gone out of the city, I will spread abroad my hands unto Jehovah; the thunders shall cease, neither shall there be any more hail; that thou mayest know that the earth is Jehovah’s.     Ex 9:29

5 And Jehovah appointed a set time, saying, To-morrow Jehovah shall do this thing in the land.     Ex 9:5

14 Behold, unto Jehovah thy God belongeth heaven and the heaven of heavens, the earth, with all that is therein.     Deut 10:14

24 The earth is Jehovah’s, and the fulness thereof; The world, and they that dwell therein.     Ps 24:1

12 If I were hungry, I would not tell thee; For the world is mine, and the fulness thereof.     Ps 50:12

11 The heavens are thine, the earth also is thine: The world and the fulness thereof, thou hast founded them.     Ps 89:11

Mankind’s

The heavens are the heavens of Jehovah; But the earth hath he given to the children of men.     Ps 115:16

Enemies

Jesus says to forgive and bless your enemies

44 but I say unto you, Love your enemies, and pray for them that persecute you;     Matt 5:44

But he will deny his enemies to God

32 Every one therefore who shall confess me before men, him will I also confess before my Father who is in heaven. 33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father who is in heaven.     Matt 10:32-33

God does not forgive his enemies, but condemns them.
Jesus says that some of his followers will be put to death

16 But ye shall be delivered up even by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolk, and friends; and some of you shall they cause to be put to death.     Luke 21:16

But not a hair of their head will perish

18 And not a hair of your head shall perish   Luke 21:18

Sabbath: Must we keep it?

Yes, under penalty of death

(Ex 20:8, 31:15-17, 35:1-3, Jer 17:21-27, and many other passages).

No

(Isa 1:13, Hos 2:11

Jesus did not keep it

27 And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: 28 so that the Son of man is lord even of the sabbath.     Mark 2:27- 28

16 And for this cause the Jews persecuted Jesus, because he did these things on the sabbath.     John 5:16

12 At that season Jesus went on the sabbath day through the grainfields; and his disciples were hungry and began to pluck ears and to eat. 2 But the Pharisees, when they saw it, said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which it is not lawful to do upon the sabbath. 3 But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was hungry, and they that were with him; 4 how he entered into the house of God, and ate the showbread, which it was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them that were with him, but only for the priests? 5 Or have ye not read in the law, that on the sabbath day the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are guiltless? 6 But I say unto you, that one greater than the temple is here. 7 But if ye had known what this meaneth, I desire mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless. 8 For the Son of man is lord of the sabbath.     Matt 12:1-8

Paul says commandment was not permanent

5 One person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind.     Rom 14:5

16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day.     Col 2:16

Catholics say they had the authority to change the Sabbath commandment to mean the day
Sunday instead.
